Can French Players Access Internet-Based Casinos?

By Juan Reedonm

The gambling industry in the France is an old one and its coasts and borders are home to some of the oldest, most successful, and world-renowned casinos. Several well-liked casino games also came from French people, for example Baccarat, Roulette, and Poker. Their penchant for games of chance and strategy fuels the emerging popularity of online French casinos, referred to as casino en ligne Francais in the vernacular.

Although online casinos have existed for a long time, they only became legalized in the country in May 2010. The French Gambling Law came about after the country was pressured by the European Commission to adhere with existing free competition directives. The current gambling legislation basically eliminated state-run monopolies in order to welcome internet gambling providers operating from other EU-member states.

Then again, French lawmakers are leery about fully legalizing Internet gambling because of its inherent risks like addiction, and fraudulent behavior among operators which may affect the country's economy adversely. Hence they put some limitations in place specifically on the types of games playable on casino en ligne Francais and created a regulating agency, the Autorit de rgulation des jeux en ligne, generally known as ARJEL, to supervise internet gambling providers. This same agency provides licenses to online casino operators. Although online horse and sports betting are fully legalized in the said law, the casino games that players in France can access are somewhat limited. Currently, only Texas Hold'em and Omaha Poker 4 are permitted. Which means other games of chance like live blackjack, roulette, or baccarat games are banned.

French players living abroad don't have any problems with this though. They can play the full range of casino games available, like virtual slot machines, table games, poker, keno, and craps. French people living in other countries prefer going to these casino en ligne Francais because the content found in them are in French, making them easy to deal with. Also, since most of these websites have chat functions, playing in them can make French expats and emigrants feel like their back home playing with their buddies. Online casinos can be categorized through their interface: web-only or download-based. Web-only casinos do not require you to download any software client to play or make bets.

Download-based casinos in contrast can only be accessed if you save and install a proprietary computer program. Between the two, downloaded versions are much faster since the graphics and sound are already stored inside the software client and are thus best for individuals with slower bandwidth. You can also find a number of websites today that provide you both options.
