Very Good Item - Dual Core Netbook Critique

By Zoey Torres

The amount of "bloatware" from Toshiba is crazy! There are a bunch of apps that you really don't need on a netbook like this.

I could see myself updating the RAM and hard drive eventually, but since I'm mainly going to use it for word processing and web surfing, the speed is adequate. The keyboard took just five minutes to get used to--it's really intuitive for someone who types a lot, despite the fact it's a little smaller than the standard.

This is exactly what I needed - lightweight, small and easy to carry without sacrificing screen quality and processing speed. The keyboard is extremely comfortable for its size, the screen crisp and clear.

The netbooks in particular are WELL designed. I had an Asus for two years, but its keyboard was not full size and the hard drive not large enough. For academic work "on the road" and for international travel, I am finding the Toshiba Mini 505-N508 perfect. Set up was easy, it was ready to use out of the box. It's solidly constructed and doesn't look like it going to fall apart after a couple of uses. If you don't expect it to do everything your PC can do, you will be pleased. This unit is very much like the NB305 series with the card reader location exchanged with the audio inputs, by moving the reader to the front (beneath the touchpad) and vice versa.

So I went online, did some research, and went to best buy and bought it for 279. First off, it is built very nicely. The keyboard is just a shrunken version of my old laptop so it works great. As far as performance, I am upgrading from that ten year old laptop with only 512 Mb ram so I am cooking right now. If you just need something small that you can use on the go this is exactly what you need. The better than average netbook keyboard really sets it aside from the competition. So, in order to upgrade to 2 GB RAM you need to buy a 2-GB RAM stick and toss away the 1GB RAM stick. Be careful since the screen is easy to break.

It's a great little machine for the money and I actually find that I can touch type with reasonable accuracy after just a couple days. I also love the touch pad, which is probably the first one I have ever used that felt somewhat natural (maybe because it has a texture instead of being smooth). But you will find that these netbooks are running the memory at below optimal speeds resulting in NO performance gain at all. So, don't be fooled into thinking that a DDR3 version of the same Netbook will outperform the DDR2 version. Good value, light, good battery life, good wireless, feels comfortable and quality made, more powerful than might be expected. I purchased this for my son to use in school. Same goes for D2, the DDR2 model. The right shift key is about half the size it is on a normal laptop, which was kind of annoying at first, but I am getting used to it.
