Exceeds Anticipations - Best Waterproof Digital Camera Critique

By Leah Hill

So far I have used this camera to shoot pictures at monster truck rallies, a welcome home ceremony when a dear friend came back from Afghanistan ( got a great video of his family running to hug him), Washington, DC when we visited the museums, and the pool. I am very happy with my camera. This is the same run of the mill point and shoot, pretty much the same as most and the same quality, there are a lot of features and the video recording is decent. This camera is perfect for someone who wants a point and shoot camera that they don't have to worry about breaking.

I love the stability control which allows for great pictures even when your hands aren't the steadiest. I also love that you don't have to freak out if you drop it, or submerge in water. This is my latest. The software is the same or beta for the GPS compatible models out now cause it is still in the camera settings but is grayed out.

You decide if you want to pay more for fancy stuff. Good pick if you want an affordable, waterproof, backup camera. Within a day of simple testing, the colored panel in the front already developed a scratch. The functions are not intuitive at all, for example, trying a simple thing like turning the camera on and then trying to zoom in you get "not available in the current mode". The internal memory holds loads of images and they are a great quality. The camera has been dropped from a top bunk onto a tile floor and thrown across a playground into sand and performed perfectly afterwards! I used my friends Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 last year on a snorkeling trip in the Dominican Republic. I completely submerged the camera for hours and it worked great.

I returned this camera for a full refund after some slight issues with Amazon. Based on this issue alone, ("blade type shutter cover over the lens that slips behind the body on operation, I can see this getting stuck eventually") I would recommend - do not purchase this camera! And in my experience salt water leaves a film on the lens so always wash in clean fresh water after any underwater activity. The on-board software glitches when I tried to load it onto my computer, but I haven't really tried to fix it yet.

I went to Greece over the summer, and I had a very hard time trying to figure out what setting to use. During the night time, if I had a dark picture, you would see "bubbles" all around and it would totally ruin your picture. I don't know if this is an electrical, software, physical or factory defect problem, but I've read a few reviews of Olympus underwater and tough models having a similar problem, so I'm hoping I can at least get the camera fixed or repaired by Olympus, but nothing can replace the photos I can't take now. These pictures, if taken under fair conditions (sufficient light, clear water), the quality is very good. Maybe that is because prior to this, for the last 6 months, I have only had my Blackberry (2.0 megapixels) camera. The quality is really good but does take a considerable amount of time to get used to the menu settings (I still don't think I am). This camera definitely has great optical quality. It's a very thin camera and the user interface is very easy to use and smart. The menu options are very easy. It is very easy to switch the flash on and off, which the option I toggle back and forth the most.
