Virtualize Your own Present Windows Desktop

By Dean Miller

Do you own a Home's windows desktop? Does one rather have a Linux computer? Would you love to run Linux as your primary OS but keep your Windows desktop accessible as some sort of virtual desktop? This is the situation I found myself in.

My employer issued people a 32-bit Microsoft windows 7 OS on a 64-bit i5 netbook with 8Gig with RAM. But not just is that extremely wasteful (32-bit OS's may well only tackle 4Gig with physical memory), it was eventually also not necessarily my OS of preference. So, I chosen to virtualize this Windows 7 use and work it within a 64-bit Linux OS. My goal was to maintain all this corporate normal programs and additionally settings (including Windows domain registration) and simply work Windows for a virtual desktop instead of my principal OS.

Used to do this applying VMWare vCenter Converter. vCenter Converter will allow you to virtualize Home's windows 7 inside background since you work. You can even save your virtualized hard drive to that physical hard drive that you're virtualizing. You simply beginning vCenter Converter when Administrator with Windows 7 and additionally walk in the motions to create a virtual hard drive. I preferred the format in the virtual hard drive as Devoted Server 1. x and I stipulated the virtual storage device to be SCSI (for some reason that is the only selection that works). I also resized the destination virtual storage device to 40GB together with I specified that this image should expect only one processor. You can take 10000RPM FIBER CHANNEL 146GB 10000RPM HD.

Once your new virtual drive is manufactured, copy the idea off a place safe so that you'll obtain it once you install ones own Linux distro. Now, pop inside your Linux install disk and replace Home's windows 7 using Linux. Once you have Ubuntu up, install Digital Box -- it's easy plus it will accomodate VMWare virtual hard drives. Create an alternative image in VirtualBox together with add ones Windows 7 virtual storage device that everyone created as a SAS SCSI drive. On the systems settings section, make certain enable IO APIC is actually checked. 73GB 10000RPM FIBRE CHANNEL is one of the best HD.

Now start your recently created virtual and then determine your previous Windows 7 computer OS run within your new Linux OS. And the best part is actually, your virtualized Windows 7 computer's desktop OS will still maintain all the domain arrangement info. A unique thing happened to me about 4 weeks after As i virtualized my Windows 7 desktop and started out running that on Linux: I had been somehow dropped in the domain. After performing a little online research, it similar that My group is not the first person to experience this trouble (surprise). But specialists that you will find there's way to set it.
