When a free Nook isn't free

By Cornelius Nunev

When is free something other than free? When HP dangles a totally free Nook offer, notes The Consumerist.

Not necessarily free

During Cyber Monday, consumer Brian started looking for a brand new laptop. According to the Consumerist, he got a totally free Noon e-reader as part of the promotion. When Brian took the Ultrabook back because he did not want it anymore, he had to pay $99 plus tax for the E-reader still.

Others have had same issue

It seems ridiculous to someone who got a "free" Nook to have to pay $99 plus tax later. Brian is not the only person who has had this problem before. Certainly the Nook was not really free and cost something. It appears on the consumer's receipt differently too, which is just how HP processes orders, it said.

The customer cannot get back the $106 they were charged for the promotion, and the business will not take back the free nook. An HP source said that the business will not take back the Nook or give a $106 refund for the system.

Wait, wasn't it a totally free Nook?

HPs fine print explained that the Nook was priced with the laptop meaning it is not really free at all. The customer had to pay for it based on the terms of the transaction.

The "free Nook" sting is still there and makes a lot of people mad since it cannot be returned, though it can be sold at the consumer's discretion.
