A courier will obviously be more expensive, but sometimes they make more sense in the case of local deliveries that may be extremely valuable or time sensitive.

Whether you're going through private services like Fedex, or government backed systems like the USPS, you'll typically be able to arrange for a very fast shipment that guarantees delivery to the recipient by a certain date.
