Protect Your Information from Prying Eyes

By Allyson Westcot

There are 2 fairly common-sense things that will compromise security for mobile employees that may be so very simple they are totally overlooked. One of those is someone looking over your shoulder while you're on the internet. The other one is the use of social networking sites like Facebook. Both can compromise information and can have very different negative results.

Someone simply watching you type and reading on the screen can capture logins, usernames, passwords, Mastercard numbers and more. Someone can zoom in on your screen from far away to see it, image capture it or film it, even if there is no one right behind you.

While this might seem not very likely to you, consider that not everyone is after business intelligence. Somebody may just be expecting to get your credit card number while you're purchasing books on Amazon or music on iTunes. Or they might desire your Amazon or iTunes information so they can download books and music on your account.

Be aware of your surroundings. Utilise a screen filter that hides the screen from the sides. Or utilize a rugged laptop with software that blurs the data when you look away, or monitors thru a camcorder for someone else taking a look at the screen and blurs it when it spots somebody.

Aside from the viruses that infrequently burn thru Facebook like wildfires, there are more risks inherent in using social networking for business purposes. If you do a job for company A, the bosses of your competitor at company B may actually be monitoring your internet behaviour. If you have got your privacy set so that your profile and information aren't public, you could feel safe. But how well do you really know all your site chums?

Whether you use a portable computer or an old desktop, guard the data you post to social marketing websites about where you are, what you've been doing and what's going on in your company.
