One Of The Few Quality Products - Smallest Netbook Critique

By Ashley Jones

The unit has three USB ports as well as an SD card reader for all your photographic and peripheral needs. The keyboard is just what I have been looking for.

As a writer I need a keyboard, so a tablet wasn't a serious option. This little netbook is just right! I was thrilled to be able to play with this netbook, as this is my girlfriend's new netbook, and she needed help setting it up to work for her needs. The biggest thing is that as it was displayed in the store (best buy), aero wasn't working correctly. It works wells. The resolution is good.

My only reason for a non 5 star review is that I had to buy a USB wireless card because Ubuntu would not find and install my built in Realtek 8188 wireless card. I did find out that when I bought it, it was one of the newest netbooks on the market. I installed it and it has worked fine. It is a DDR3 not DDR2 module which is what I think Toshiba sent me. It cannot play back 720 or higher video. And, its playback of 480 is probably only ok by most people's standards.

As for speed, the computer is powerful enough for a netbook, and will run net-based and home office applications smoothly. Of course, it falls short for more intense use like video editing, image processing or games - but then again, that's not what this computer is for. I put in a second GB but haven't really noticed major improvements, it was fine before but it's nice knowing that it's already there. I also loaded Win7 Home because it was $20.

The screen is very clear and the speed is pretty good too. I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium and installed 2GB of memory.

I did add another GB of memory, which was very simple to do. All in all good buy for the money and, as usual, Amazon provided excellent service. Now that I have had a chance to use and play with my new netbook I know I made the right choice and I couldn't be more pleased. I needed a device to store pictures on a long vacation so I looked for offline storage devices. I purchased it over others due to the ergonomics and keyboard design and am not disappointed. Even the Office Starter program and Windows 7 Starter have proved to be adequate for my needs and I have not had to upgrade. Small, lightweight, flexible and cheap were the watchwords. After reading a bunch of reviews, I settled on this Toshiba (including a 2 GB chip upgrade).

If it stays this way, I will purchase the full version of the NSIS software as well when this trial version runs out. Overall extremely pleased with this unit so far!
