What makes a good website?

By Raul Yates

If you ask people what makes a good website, it is likely that each person you ask will give you a slightly different answer. This is because what makes a good website is partly down to personal taste, but there are however some key components that can make or break a company's website.

What is your website for? This is the first and arguably the most important question to ask yourself. Your website needs to have a very clear purpose, and every page and part of it must be contributing to making this aim or objective clear.

People launch websites for many different reasons. Some do it to offer an informative resource and to become a respected authority in their field, whilst others do it to introduce new companies and brands or to sell products to new markets. You need to decide why you are launching your website, as well as who you are hoping to reach with it. Once you know this, let your bespoke web design company know.

Now that your website has a purpose, it's time to think about the design. Elements such as style, alignment, colour and many other visual elements all go into a successful design, and the whole thing should be made up with your company or brand image in mind. The layout and design of your website should also be customer-orientated, with the aim of making it easy for visitors to navigate the site.

As for the content on your website, this is what visitors to your site are there to see. It is crucial that each page you add has a clear purpose, and that every image or piece of text is there to make a specific point.

Of course, there are many other elements that go into creating a successful website. As any small business web design company will tell you, your site needs to be easy to use, simple to navigate, secure and accessible, as well as optimised for search engines.
