Does your business need a mobile app?

By Barry P Farway

If you're looking for a way to grow or publicise your business you might have thought about the options available to you. One of the things you might not have considered is expanding your business with the help of a mobile app. Mobile apps could be the perfect way to communicate with your customers on an intimate level, helping to drive sales and increase revenue. So, should your business have a mobile app?

Firstly, consider the fact that billions of apps are being downloaded on a range of mobile devices. With millions of mobile users downloading apps, a mobile app is the perfect way to reach them. If ultimately you decided a mobile app is not right for your business you need to at least ensure that your website is optimised for mobile browsing. With so many users now browsing the internet on a mobile device you cannot afford to have them moving on from your site to a competitor's just because the layout of your site makes it difficult to navigate.

Now consider the cost of having an app developed - this is often the biggest concern for small businesses that would like to have their own mobile app but don't think they can afford it. While mobile app development isn't cheap if you want something that will work well, if the return on investment is healthy then the cost will be worth it. Furthermore, the cost of an app is a one-time fee, unlike something like advertising, which will need continual payments.

A mobile app can do many things for your customer depending on the type of business you have. Using the GPS functionality of the user's phone it could provide them directions to your site. Other businesses may want to offer discounts to people who have downloaded their app and share their activity on a social networking site.

If you're uncertain about whether a mobile app is right for your business you can't be blamed. After all, in the grand scheme of things mobile apps have existed for a tiny amount of time. However, even if you're hesitant you should find out if having a mobile app developed could help increase your revenue - that's just good business sense.
